What is it?

You need to report your relocation to the municipality where you are moving to.

Do you move to or within our municipality?

  • You have to do this within 5 days after you have moved.
  • It is also possible to inform your new municipality prior of your move. You can do this up to 4 weeks before the date of your relocation.

If you are late with notifying the municipality, this may have consequences for perhaps housing allowance, student financing, parking permits, municipal taxes of benefits.

Moving abroad

If you are moving abroad you have to inform the municipality you are leaving 5 days before you move. You have to declare emigration.

How does it work?

The following people may report a move:

  • Everyone above the age of 16 years are able to report a move for themselves.
  • Cohabiting spouses/registered partners can report a move for each other (only if they move together from one address to the other).
  • The parents, guardians or caregivers for children under age.
  • Parent (s) for adult children living at home (only if they move together from one address to the other).
  • Adult children for their parent(s) with who they live with (only if they move together from one address to the other)
  • The curator for someone under guardianship.
  • The head of the institution for people staying in an institution.

Someone who has authorized you to report the move for you.

Authorizing someone else

You may authorize someone else to report the move for you. Therefore you need a letter of consent mentioning the following:

“I hereby authorize (your initials, surname, date of birth and place of birth and address), the person below (initials, surname, date of birth and place of birth and address of the person you authorize) to report my move from (old address) to (new address).”

  • This letter should include your signature;
  • The person being authorized must have a valid identification;
  • The person being authorized must bring (a copy) of your valid identification.

Institutions that need the details of your move

The municipality will pas on your relocation to the institutions ( https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/privacy-en-persoonsgegevens/vraag-en-antwoord/wie-krijgen-mijn-persoonsgegevens-uit-brp(externe link)) that need this information for the performance of their legal duties.

What do I need?

Inform the municipality digitally

  • Your eIDAS credentials.
  • Copy of rental or purchase contract.

Inform the municipality personally

  • Your valid identification.
  • Rental or purchase contract.

You are moving in with someone

  • Copy of your valid identification.
  • Written permission of the main tenant of the home.
  • Copy of the valid identification of the main tenant.

Postal address

A postal address is a temporary address where you can receive mail if you do not have a home address. If you want to register a postal address you need the following:

  • Copy of your valid identification.
  • A letter stating why you want a postal address.
  • A letter of the main tenant of the postal address stating that he or she will make sure that you will receive the mail delivered on the postal address.
  • Copy of the valid identification of the main tenant.

What should I do?

Important

Inform the municipality of your relocation within 5 days after you have moved. It is possible to inform your new municipality prior of your move. You can do this up to 4 weeks before the date of your relocation.

  • If you inform the municipality of your move after these 5 days, the date on which you pass on the change to the municipality is the official date of change of address.
  • If you have submitted a move in the future, the municipality will adjust the address details on the date that you provide. This is the date of change of address.
  • Make sure to provide all the necessary documents, otherwise the municipality cannot register your new address.

How long does it take?

The municipality will adjust your address within 5 working days.

DigiD

Stands for Digital Identity and is being used to arrange something with a (semi) governmental organization on the Internet. Anyone who has a citizen service number (BSN number) and is registered in the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP) can apply for a DigiD.

eIDAS

(Electronic Identification Authentication and trust Services) is a method conducted by the European Union (EU) to make cross-border usage of the national digital identity method possible. Logging in, at the moment, can only be done with the national digital identity methods from the following member states of the EU: Belgium, Germany, Estonia, Italy, Croatia, Luxembourg and Spain.

  • It is not possible to register moving without a rental or purchase contract or without the consent of the main tenant of the home.
  • In some cases there is no rental or purchase contract but an arrangement or other type of contract.
  • If you inform the municipality of your move digitally, these documents need to be digitally available. It is also possible to upload a picture of the documents, as long as the pictures are clear. Maximum of 5 MB per file.
  • On the first page of the document(s) the address and the type or name of the document (such as a contract) should be clearly visible.
