What is it?
- If you have lost or found an object you can report this at the municipality. You do not have to go to the police for this.
- However, if you suspect that an object has been stolen you do have to report this to the police.
What should I do?
Report the object, lost or found by arranging it online or by calling the municipality.
Report lost and found objects
You report lost and found objects at the municipality, unless you suspect theft. At the municipality you can ask for a proof of reporting the object. The municipality will contact you whenever the object is found.
Saving a found object
After reporting a found object, you can choose to save the found object yourself. It is also possible to give the object to the municipality where it will be stored. If you choose for storing it at the municipality, it is possible to receive a proof of this.
Ownership of the found object
During the reporting of the found object, you can indicate that if the owner of the lost object will not be found you want to become the owner of the object. If the object is not picked up within a year, you will get ownership over the object.
If the municipality is storing the object for you, you can only become the owner of the object if the value of it is more than €450,-. You have to report this at the municipality in one month after the retention period of a year.
