Millennium municipalities
The "Millennium municipalities" have committed themselves to achieving the following goals for the future:
These aims are:
- 1. Extreme poverty and hunger are banned
- 2. All boys and girls go to school
- 3. Men and women have identical rights
- 4. Infant mortality decreases significantly
- 5. Less women die in pregnancy
- 6. The spreading of illnesses as Aids and Malaria are stopped
- 7. More people will live in a sustainable environment
- 8. There is an increase in honest trade, dept relief and aid
In 2007 the municipality of Wassenaar is proud to become the 40th Millennium municipality in the Netherlands. We support the following local initiatives:
- Broeder Zon, build substitute family homes in Brazil for the housing of street children
- Kiwakukkie, Have committed themselves to the support of women in Africa whose families have been damaged by aids. Also to invest in the convalescence of dignity and respect of the individual family members.
- Wereldwinkel, The aim of this shop is the support and promote of development of Third World countries by enabling them to achieve their independence though the sale of their own products.
- Run for Rio, The primary schools in Wassenaar have contributed to the building of new schools in Ethiopia.
- The secondary schools (Rijnlands Lyceum and Adelbert) have also contributed. The Adelbert have recently collected a large sum by rowing for schools in Kenia, and the Rijnlands Lyceum support projects for education and health in Ghana.
- Diaconaat Congo, aim to improve education, women's education, welfare and horticulture in Central Africa. Adesa, Their target is to support the poor in Peru. Especially those who live in slums in the periphery of Lima. The give medical, educational and social aid.
